Glenorchy’s third straight win for the season came against New Town in the Brian Eade Memorial Cup game at the New Town bike track.
The Eade Cup game for those who don’t know is named after Brian Eade who was a tremendous servant of both clubs playing over 15 years with New Town before moving to Glenorchy to play in a 1st Grade premiership, captain and coach teams down the grades and spend a number of years on the club’s board.
Brian was a tremendous character and hard worker for the club who sadly passed away in 2007. It was fantastic to see Brian’s widow Marge come along and present the cup on the day.
The game itself was somewhat of a danger game for the pies with the townies being a lot better side on paper than their recent results had shown in saying that though they got off to a horrid start at one stage being 5/68, a partnership of a 125 steadied the ship and they where 9 down for 216 after their 50 over’s.
The highlight of the Glenorchy bowling being a Nathan Matthews hat-trick the first in 1st grade since Roger Hughes in the early 90s.
Glenorchy’s reply got off to a flier with Rob Dilger and Brad Absolom putting on 98 for the 1st wicket contributions from Dane Anderson with 36 and Nathan Matthews with 24no saw the pies to victory by 7 wickets and 20 balls to spare.
It’s rare that a hat-trick gets over shadowed but Rob Dilgers dismissal for 99 did exactly that, it was the 7th time he has been dismissed in the 90s in 1st Grade and his 21st first grade fifty for the club which gives him the unenviable club record of most fifty’s without a ton, surpassing Kel Coberns 20.
Robbie’s a fantastic bloke around the club as well as a quality player and there really was a sense of disbelief amongst the team and supporters when he chipped one to mid on. When that illusive 100 does come (and it will come) the fridges had better be well stocked. Still a win’s a win and I’m sure Brian would’ve been looking down from above with a smile.
